NATURE PROJECT ALERT :
NATURE RESOURCES STUDY PUBLIC COMMENT MEETING

Joint Planning Commission Hearing
Tuesday, March 6 2001

Joint Work Session - 5:30PM
McNutt Room, Eugene City Hall

Joint Public Comment Session - 6:30PM
Council Chambers, Eugene City Hall

This public meeting will provide the first formal chance for public
comment since the original Natural Resources Study workshops held in
June 2000.

The Planning Commissions of Eugene, Springfield, and Lane County
will jointly be hearing public comment on both the current inventory
list, and on the draft significance criteria.

We have only heard of this important meeting on VERY short notice.
Three things seem immediately obvious:

1) The inventory list and maps are new to us, reflecting which of
the sites submitted by the Nature Project were included and which
sites were not. We need more time to reasonably digest the updated
inventory.

2) This is the first time ever that we have been allowed to see the
draft significance criteria, after nine months of asking when we
could see them. We need more time to reasonably digest the
significance criteria.

3) Apparently, landowners affected by the Natural Resources
Inventory were notified by individual mailings, while other citizen
interveners were not. This basic imbalance in public notice needs
to be put right.

Therefore we intend to ask for a thirty day period following the
Tuesday meeting for the public to submit written comments, which
will be presented to the three planning commissions in at least as
much detail as any comments and/or transcripts from the original
public comment period, and on all corresponding occasions.

The GOOD NEWS is that ten new sites WERE ADDED, and some existing
sites were extended, as a result of our collective mapping efforts.
That is a great start, so congratulations to all!

Now we need to stay on the scent as faithful watchdogs, while the
public process and site evaluations continue.
