Traffic Calming Project Begins Monday on 31st, 33rd, 34th Avenues
Triton Group Inc., of Eugene, has been awarded a Public Works contract to
install various traffic-calming measures on 31st, 33rd, and 34th avenues
between Donald and Hilyard streets. The project, which begins Monday, July
9, is scheduled to be completed in late August and is estimated to cost
approximately $90,000. Funds from the U.S. Postal Service, which opened a
new post office at 33rd and Willamette several years ago, will cover most of
the project costs. No costs will be assessed to abutting property owners.

Most of the work will be done on 33rd Avenue. Approximately 3,000 vehicles
use the street each day, including emergency vehicles from the South Hills
Station on 33rd between Willamette and Donald. The Eugene Fire Department
has reviewed the project plans, which include a concrete island at 33rd and
Donald, 14 raised planters that narrow the street, and three mid-block
painted islands with raised reflective buttons. Four speed humps will be
installed on 31st Avenue, and three humps will be placed on 34th Avenue.

An open house was held in February to give property owners and residents the
opportunity to be involved in the design of the project. On the City's
list of more than 150 traffic-calming requests currently on file in Public
Works Transportation, 33rd Avenue is the highest ranking street. Both 31st
and 34th avenues were included in the project due to their relative high
ranking and the potential for spillover traffic seeking to avoid
traffic-calming efforts on 33rd. For more information, contact Bud
DeSantis, Project Manager, 682-5560, or Nathan Duke, Neighborhood
Transportation Program Manager,
at 682-5267.
